Dr. Malcom Finney attended the Prince of Wales Secondary School, Kingtom (Form 1-5) and the St. Edwards Secondary School (6th form). He graduated from FBC, University of Sierra Leone, with a BA (Honors) in English in 1984, and taught at Alma Mater for a year (1984-85). He received a Commonwealth Scholarship in 1985 to pursue a Master’s in Linguistics at the University of Ottawa, Canada. Later graduated with a PhD at the University of Ottawa in 1994. Between 1994 & 1999 he lectured in the Linguistics Department and the Department of Education at the University of Ottawa. He also lectured at School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies, Carleton University, Ottawa (1997—1999). Currently, he is Professor in the Linguistics Department, California State University Long Beach (CSU-LB), where he teaches classes and does research work on Bilingual and Literacy Development and on Pidgin and Creole Linguistics. He has made important research contributions in these fields nationally and internationally. He was graduate advisor for the Linguistics Department between 2004 and 2008 and has been Chair of the department since 2008. Under his leadership, the Linguistics Department has received university recognition for high student graduation rates and for implementing high impact educational practices. Currently serves as an External Examiner for Master’s and Ph.D. students in the Linguistics Department at the University of Legon, Ghana. He has been actively involved in the Long Beach community in working with the Libraries, School for Adults, and family literacy by providing resources and expertise in helping children who are at risk of poor academic achievement and adults with low literacy levels enhance their English language and literacy skills. He serves on several boards and has received numerous awards and recognitions for his services. He currently offers Diversity Awareness workshops to campus professors. Dr. Finney currently serves as an Usher and Vestry Member of the Saint Gregory’s Episcopal Church, LB, and previously served similarly at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Torrance. In the Sierra Leone community in Southern California, he is an Active member of the Prince of Wales Alumni Association of Southern California and has served in different capacities including Vice President, Secretary, and Organizing Secretary in the organization. In his spare time, he loves to travel, watch sports, and listen to reggae, African, and 70’s music. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Edith, for 29 years and counting, and together they have 3 wonderful children – Minette, Malcolm (Junior), and Marilyn.
