Goodwill Awards

The So-Cal UBSSL Goodwill Awards recognizes and celebrates individuals, organizations, and corporations for their charitable acts in response to the humanitarian needs of Sierra Leoneans.


The primary purpose of the So-Cal UBSSL Awards is to inspire the community to participate in the efforts of helping the poor in Sierra Leone by delivering a message of hope that will lift spirits and touch hearts. Through live footage, the Awards showcase the challenges and accomplishments of individuals, humanitarian organizations, and related groups whose commitment has significantly uplifted and given hope to many underprivileged in Sierra Leone. The Awards also celebrate individual career achievements and community service. The emphasis is to bring communities and businesses together to continue their commitment of helping people in need.

2019 Humanitarian Award Recipient

Dr. Lloydette Harolda Vanessa Buckle Brewah

Dr. Lloydette Harolda Vanessa Buckle Brewah DNP-C AGNP- BC is a wife to Mr. Jeffrey L. Brewah and a mother of 4. Dr Brewah is a practicing doctorate Nurse Practitioner for Adult and Geriatrics medicine and also pursuing post doctorate for mental health medicine. Amongst her many achievements, Dr Brewah is a CEO and co-owner of Dr Lloyds Health Advantage DBA Health “R” Us Urgent Care and Walk -In Clinic and Caring Clinician Inc. She is also a Faculty Liaison for West Coast University Nurse Practitioner Program. She is Founder of Sierra Leone Health Care Alliance Network (SLHAN), Republic Investments for Sierra Leonean entrepreneurs; and a member of People’s Club of Nigeria International; Inland Empire branch. She is a Pfizer Medical Reporter for North America Menopause Society and a member of numerous professional organizations.

Her work for SLHAN has entailed the most impressive of all, where she strives to find support for our main Connaught hospital patients. She is working to maintain that authentic medications reach patients in Sierra Leone by shipping medications from United States mostly for infections, diabetes, high blood pressure and pain management. Dr. Brewah plans to extend her endeavors for needed large diagnostic equipment and to shine a spot light on mental health care by engaging in Mental health diagnosis awareness, personnel training and treatment.

Characteristically, Dr Brewah is a self -starter. Ideologically, she utilizes initiatives to achieve common good. She is a great communicator that focuses on core objectives and exudes utmost confidence in her work, her family, and her community. Her motto is to embrace and build others, to spread her wings and leave a lasting legacy.

Dr. Brewah is an active member in the Sierra Leonean community in Southern California. Someone once mentioned that she is a “blessing to us”- she is ready to not only assist in putting social events together for the community; she will even spend her own money to make sure that what she has been asked to do turns out well. Her reputation speaks for itself as she is known to answer to calls within short notices.

2019 Community Leadership Award Recipient

Mr. Marcus Patrick Johnson

Mr. Marcus Patrick Johnson was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone where he grew up. He attended the St. Anthony's Primary School and St. Edwards Secondary School. After graduating from secondary school, he attended the Freetown Trade Center where he obtained a certificate in Motor Vehicle  Mechanic's and City and Guilds of London Institute Certificate . He worked for the Public Works Department in Freetown for 5 years. He later on worked for Sierra Leone  Army Engineers  for many years. He was the Choir Master of St. Anthony's Church Brookfields Freetown and a Referee of the Sierra Leone Football Association He attended Citrus College in Glendora, California where he studied Diesel Technology. He worked at Nelco for 18 years until his retirement in 2016. He currently works part time with Reddaway.

Mr. Johnson is very active within the Sierra Leone community is Southern California. He acts like a “town Crier” as most community events are sent through him for dissemination to the public. He was the Chairman Moreno Valley Conclave and Treasure of  Krio Descendant Association; he served both organizations very diligently. In addition to his community activism, he was the organizer of the annual “Inter Faith Prayers” that was bringing Muslims and Christian from Sierra Leone together to celebrate Sierra Leone’s Independence. He is a loving husband, father, grandfather and with 5 children and 10 grandchildren. His loving wife Gloria Johnson is the love of his life. Marcus is loved by all and is man of God.  He deserves the “Community Leadership Award”.

Selection Process and Award Categories

So-Cal UBSSL Goodwill Award recipients are selected from a pool of nominated candidates. The selection is based on a combination of factors and covers a wide range of areas of accomplishments and contributions to humanity. The award categories are as follows:

Community Leadership Award: This award is bestowed on an individual with an inspirational career accomplishment and lifelong devotion to Sierra Leonean 

community service.

Sierra Leonean Jewel Award: This award is bestowed on an individual with an exemplary career accomplishment and a demonstrated inspiration for others to follow _ a source of joy and pride to the community and country of Sierra Leone.

The Goodwill Ambassador Award: This award is bestowed on individuals, organizations or corporations with a remarkable commitment to the plight and progress of the poorest of the poor in Sierra Leone. Screening of candidates is based on their humanitarian effort 

and commitment.

Thy Brothers’ Keeper Award: This award is bestowed on an individual’s contribution, representation and work or sacrifices for the advancement of Sierra Leone at large.


Awards will be presented to the successful nominees in all four award categories at our Annual Dinner and Dance Fundraiser to celebration of Sierra Leone’s Independence Anniversary on the 3rd Saturdays in April. Award recipients will be featured on the UBSSL website and various UBSSL publications.
